Fight Hunger 5K Update

Thank you ALL for a wonderful turn out at last Sunday's Fight Hunger 5K. We certainly were lucky with the weather...maybe a little too lucky!

Congratulations to the committee, staff, and volunteers on pulling off a smooth-running and very successful event. We will have an official report and numbers soon, but a current snapshot shows 122 registered participants (I suspect with children and others who weren't on a registration form, that number is a bit higher) and with sponsors and donations we raised more than $10,000! We'll have to wait on the bottom line on that, too, once all expenses are accounted for and final donations straggle in. All in all, we exceeded our goals, and we have a lot to be proud of. Thank you all.

If you haven't seen some of the fun pictures Brianna took, check out our Facebook page.

If you were meaning to make a donation but never quite got around to it, there is still time - go here!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Show some team spirit and support GardenShare

Teams are signing up for the Fight Hunger 5K!

What's a team?  It could be any group of friends, family, or co-workers who want to walk or run together in the the 5K.

So far, there are four teams signed up, with some great team names:

  • Every Revolution Begins with a Spark (they are currently in the lead for fundraising!)
  • CPHealthy (representing Canton-Potsdam Hospital, and they currently have the largest team)
  • Team Tamera
  • GardenShare friends team

While we'd love to have you take part in the 5K in any way that works for you - solo, with your family, or on a team - we hope you'll think about organizing a team to spread the word and engage more people in this important work.

And, don't forget, there is a prize for the top fundraising team!

Sign up here and the system will walk you through joining an existing team, starting a new team, or just registering as an individual.

Volunteers are needed to help plan 5K!

Save the date!  The third annual Fight Hunger 5K will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Remington Trail in Canton.

Volunteers organize the 5K and to ensure another successful event, the planning starts now!

Event overview:

The Fight Hunger 5K is a fundraising walk – run where participants secure sponsors for their participation.  Participants may then walk or run the 5K course.  An honor system timing mechanism will be provided for runners who are interested in being timed, but it is not a race.  Participants may secure sponsors via an online platform or with a paper pledge form.  Participants are asked to bring sponsorships secured via cash or check to the event.  Teams of participants from schools, churches, businesses, or other organizations are encouraged.  Prizes are given for the top fundraising individual and team.  In addition, corporate sponsors support this event.

Committee role:

Plan and organize event recruitment activities and logistics.  Maximize the fundraising value of the event by engaging business sponsors and recruiting participants who will raise money.  Work within the event budget to minimize expenses, including securing donations of needed supplies.  Coordinate with GardenShare Board of Directors and staff.

Anticipated committee meeting schedule:
  • ·         Monthly meetings April to July
  • ·         Bi-weekly meetings August to September
  • ·         One follow-up debrief meeting after the event
If you could give some volunteer hours to this event, please get in touch - 315-261-8054 or office@gardenshare.org.

12 days - 12 ways GardenShare is making a difference - day 11

As we wind down our review of 2016 at GardenShare, we just had to highlight September's Fight Hunger 5K!

On Sunday, September 11, 116 people turned out to run or walk the 5K course - more than twice as many participants as last year!  Together with the business sponsors, the participants raised $8,500 to support GardenShare's mission of solving the problem of hunger in St. Lawrence County.  The funds raised will help low and moderate-income people access fresh, locally grown food and in the process, support our local farmers.

We're excited about the success of this two-year-old event, not just in fundraising, but more important, in bringing people together around the issues of hunger, local food, and food systems policy.

Planning will begin soon for next year's Fight Hunger 5K and it takes a dedicated group of volunteers to make this work.  Would you like to help?  Get in touch!

SLU First Year Program students will take part in Fight Hunger 5K

St. Lawrence University First Year Program students are participating this Sunday in the  GardenShare Fight Hunger 5K.  Each of the First Year colleges (Brown, Campbell, Heaton, Herrick, Holmes, MacAllaster, Romer, Romoda, and Reiff) will send students to run in this event as well as raise money by getting friends and family to sponsor them.  Students interested in participating will have the opportunity to secure sponsorship from family/friends via GardenShare's online fundraising tools and will also collect “spare change” from other students in their residences.

The college with the top number of participants and the most money raised, will “win” the inter-college competition.  The prize will be a Sergi’s pizza party in a lounge of the residence hall where the winning team lives.
